During the first week of the third season at Kursi Beach, a complete 7th century oil lamp with decorative features was found by Shmulik Grassiani, the same volunteer who uncovered the inscription from last year.

In addition a 2 metre high wall has been found as part of what is clearly a large building, and older than the synagogue found in the first season.

The hypothesis that a mud slide covered the site and ended village life is being explored, and Dr Haim Cohen is becoming more and more convinced of the theory’s validity.

A lot of vegetation had to be cleared and marking out squares took up a lot of time.
